Delta-9 THC in Hemp-Derived vs. Traditional Cannabis: Know the Difference

It looks like marijuana, acts like marijuana, but is not marijuana— hemp-derived THC contains less than 0.3% THC by dry weight without a limit for dosage in products, and is available for sale across many of the states. You may even find it in your local liquor store! But what is the difference between hemp-derived and traditional cannabis?

Well, remember in the previous blog “A Sip of Clarity: Reducing your Alcohol Intake & Drinking Cannabis,” where we discussed cannabinoids? Feel free to go back and refresh yourself on the topic if you forgot because this is going to be our key to understanding the differences between hemp-derived THC and cannabis. Ready?

Hemp-Derived THC: A Legal Alternative

Hemp-derived THC is sourced from the hemp plant (cannabis sativa), and is derived in the same way that delta-9 THC is obtained in cannabis plants. Being the most sought after compound in the flower, since D-9 THC is the one that gets you high, hemp-derived THC is an alternative for those who lack recreational or medical cannabis legalization in their state. The only difference between the two is that hemp-derived contains 0.3% THC or less, whereas recreational & medical cannabis can contain anywhere from 15-99% THC in the full cannabis spectrum.

Since the 2018 Farm Bill was passed, hemp-derived and recreational cannabis have become a confusing topic nationwide with several different state laws in place. Although, nearly all of the states have deemed hemp-derived products to be legal for sale, with certain restrictions on distribution and packaging.

Since hemp grows relatively fast and is federally legal, it can provide an alternative for everyday products. Hemp plants can be used in a multitude of things from paper and textiles, to oil, protein, and infused beverages.

Traditional Marijuana: The Recreational Cannabis

On the other hand, compounds derived from cannabis strains contain higher levels of D-9 THC, which can induce psychoactive effects when consumed. These strains are commonly referred to as marijuana, and their THC percentage can vary between different strains of cannabis plants.

When we say that our infused drinks contain the “full spectrum cannabis,” we just mean that it has multiple cannabis plant extracts, including essential oils, terpenes, and other cannabinoids, such as cannabinol. Whereas hemp-derived product only has delta-9 THC, recreational marijuana can have several other cannabinoids such as Cannabinol (CBN), which can be helpful for sleep.

Since hemp-derived and traditional cannabis offer the same delta-9 THC compound, the effects will be identical: increased feelings of wellness, relaxation, & sense of calm, improved sleep, and better post-workout recovery. But, recreational and medical cannabis that has additional cannabinoids are usually catered to cannabis users who seek out certain effects and sensations (such as sleep or focus).

Cannabis in Beverages

While hemp-derived THC is legal and non-intoxicating, offering potential wellness benefits, recreational cannabis is known for its psychoactive effects. The choice between the two depends on your personal preferences, needs, and the legal regulations in your area. Products from both hemp plants and cannabis plants are often consumed for recreational and medical purposes, resulting in a "high" sensation. Whichever product you choose, it's essential to use it responsibly and listen to your body.
